Tuition benefits
The advantages of learning to drive with a professional driving school
If you are asking yourself why you should take lessons from an Approved Driving Instructor, the answer is simple…
According to the Driving Standards Agency (the body responsible for administering and setting the standards for the driving test):
It is unlikely that anyone except an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) would have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly. Learning safe driving habits from the start will improve the safety of yourself and other road users.
— DSA publication: Safe Driving for Life
Professional driving schools such as Argus School of Motoring employ only Approved Driving Instructors. To become qualified, an ADI must pass a theory test, and strict tests of driving and instructional ability. All ADIs must maintain a high standard of instruction and are graded by the DSA. Fully qualified ADIs display a green certificate on the windscreen of the tuition vehicle while giving lessons.
DSA statistics show that the overall pass rate for the practical driving test is only about 43% — and for first time candidates, it is even lower. The reason for this poor success rate is because most candidates are not properly prepared. But if you learn to drive with an ADI, your instructor will take you through a structured course of lessons in which you will learn all of the skills needed before you take your driving test. Your instructor will not recommend that you apply for a test unless he believes you are ready.
Private practice
If you are able to supplement and build on what you learn from your instructor by practising privately under the supervision of a responsible friend or relative, it is worthwhile doing so. DSA statistics also indicate that candidates who have built up experience through private practice as well as formal tuition have a higher success rate in the driving test.
