Driving lessons in Edinburgh
What you need to know about driving lessons from Argus School of Motoring
Learning to drive in Edinburgh with professional motoring tuition from an Approved Driving Instructor
A standard driving lesson with Argus lasts for one hour. The service is “door-to-door”: your instructor will pick you up at your chosen address at the start of the lesson, and deliver you back there at the end. You will never share the car with another pupil.
Driving lessons are aimed mainly at teaching you the competencies needed to pass the practical driving test, but your instructor will also advise you on preparing for the theory test.
How many lessons?
Different people have different aptitudes, so we cannot make a blanket statement about how many lessons you will need. According to figures from the Driving Standards Agency, those people who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional tuition, combined with 22 hours of private practice. Candidates who combine professional instruction with private practice are also more sucessful on the test.
The DSA figures relate mainly to people taking the test in a manual transmission car. You may find that learning to drive in an automatic requires less tuition time to prepare you for the test. In short, some people need more lessons and practice than others.
Structured tuition
Your Argus driving instructor will structure and pace your lessons according to your own needs and abilities, so that you acquire all of the 24 key skills needed to drive safely according to the DSA’s Official Guide to Learning to Drive and which are tested in the practical driving test.
Throughout your period of tuition, your driving instructor will monitor and make a paper record of your level of achievement in each of the required skills. This “driver’s record” will let you see your progress and identify which skills need more attention. Your instructor will rate and update your progress according to five achievement levels:
- Introduced.
- Under full instruction.
- Prompted.
- Seldom prompted.
- Independent.
You will not be ready for your practical driving test until you have reached Level 5 in all of the 24 key skills.
