Advanced tuition
You’ve passed the driving test, so what next?
Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years of passing their test than at any other time in their driving career.
In the first year of driving, one driver in five is involved in an accident. The reason for this is simple: lack of driving experience.
However, Argus School of Motoring can help you to mitigate the risk of becoming “another statistic” by providing you with some advanced tuition options.
Pass Plus
Pass Plus is a training scheme for new drivers. The course was designed by the Driving Standards Agency and comprises six practical modules that cover driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. You can take the course at any time within the first twelve months of passing your driving test. The course will help you to
- gain valuable driving experience safely — you will learn how to deal with a wide range of road and traffic situations that you probably have not faced before;
- build on your existing skills and knowledge, using expert tuition to speed up the process by which you become a skilled driver;
- reduce your risk of being in a road crash, by boosting your awareness of all kinds of hazards and teaching you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with them safely;
- boost your confidence — if you feel nervous driving on your own, the course can help you become more confident on the roads;
- save money on car insurance premiums — a number of insurance companies taking part in the scheme offer discounts to drivers who have passed the course, and the savings may even be greater than the cost of the course.
The course takes a minimum of six hours tuition, depending on your progress. There is no test at the end of it — your driving will be continually assessed by your instructor and you must achieve or exceed the standard required for all of the modules in the course. Your instructor maintains a Training Report Form for you, which is submitted to the Driving Standards Agency on successful completion of the course. The DSA will then issue you with a Pass Plus Certificate of Completion.
You can find out more about Pass Plus on the DSA’s Pass Plus web site: www.passplus.org.uk.
Motorway driving
One of the limitations you faced as a learner driver is that learners are not permitted to drive on the motorway network. Motorway driving involves additional skills and knowledge that you were unable to practice as a learner. For many newly-qualified drivers, this makes their first venture out on to the motorway a daunting experience. Even those for whom confidence is not a major issue will still benefit from some instruction in motorway driving techniques.
Argus can bring you up to speed with motorway driving tuition, addressing topics such as
- planning journeys in advance;
- joining and leaving a motorway, using slip roads;
- safe speeds in different circumstances;
- effective observation all around your vehicle;
- signs, signals and markings;
- overtaking and lane discipline;
- courtesy to other road users;
- motorway fatigue;
- breakdown procedures;
- use of lights, including hazard warning lights;
- debris on the carriageway;
- crosswinds.
Motorways are like no other roads. Learn how to drive on them safely and correctly under expert supervision from Argus.
Night driving
Many newly-qualified drivers have never driven at night. Driving in the dark means coping with some situations and circumstances that you simply do not encounter in daylight. Argus can prepare you for safe night driving with some advanced tuition covering
- the importance of the correct use of headlights;
- adjusting to the dark;
- judging speed and distance;
- the correct use of lights and keeping them clean;
- dealing with dazzle;
- road users who can be hard to see;
- parking issues.
Let Argus teach you the essentials of driving in the dark and at dawn and dusk.
